Water: Not the Endless Resource
We Once Thought Saving Ourselves through Water Conservation and Awareness

Water is life, lt is what everyone needs to survive. We must, as a species, have access to drinkable water on a daily basis, otherwise we will all perish. A human being can only live without water for approximately 3 days, then the body begins to shut down. Our fresh water supply is shrinking and we need to wake up to the fact that many of us are careless with our water, When people are dying of thirst in Africa, we water our lawns and swim in our pools. This is a serious issue for everyone on the planet. Water conservation should be at the top of our list in regards to overuse and un-needed abuse.

Water is the fundamental element of survival; everything in our society depends on the ability to use water. Populations tend to cluster around sources of water. This can lead to further problems and concerns surrounding water usage and pollution. Agricul-ture thrives where water can be diverted from its natural channels to the surrounding area. By diverting too much water, we change eco systems and disturb the balance of life on the planet. Now, let's take a look at these statistics that lf  may explain why water is no longerthe endless resource
  • Less than one half of one percent of all water on Earth is fresh water for human use. The rest is sea water or frozen in polar ice caps.
  • 1.4 billion people, that's 20% of the worlds population, lack access to an ade-quate supply of clean drinking water,
  • Global water consumption is doubling every 20 years, more than twice the rate of human population growth.
  • 31 countries currently face water scarcity.
  • Women in Africa and Asia walk, on aver age, 6 km each day to collect water.
  • More than half the world’s major rivers are either poiluted or drying.ln developing countries, water causes 80% of illnesses. Each year 3 to 4 million people die of waterborne diseases.
  • By 2025, two-thirds of the world’s population will live in conditions of water short age and one third will live in absolute water scarcity

The Cause
The problem is not the amount of water. The amount of water on Earth remains constant ~ it doesn’t increase or decrease  and there is enough to meet every one”s needs. The problem is unequal access and use.
Different regions of the world naturally hold dif ferent amounts of fresh water. India, for exam ple, holds 20% of the world’s population but only 4% of its water. This natural division of water is easy for governments to overcome with the right technology. The problem of water scarcity arises when limited water is cou pled with social inequalities and political agendas. Who gets access to a region’s water and how they use it is usually determined by who has power and money.

1. Don”t use your toilet as a wastebasket or flush it unnecessarily. Toilets consume a quarter of our municipal water supply and use 40% more water than needed.
2. Turn off the tap when you brush your teeth or soap dishes, etc.
3. Keep a bottle of drinking water in the fridge. Don't run your tap for cold water.
4. Run your dishwasher and washing ma chine only when they are full.
5. Check pipes and faucets for leaks and get them fixed. Many homes lose more water from leaky taps than they need for cooking and drinking.
6. Install low-flow shower heads and flow restrictors on faucets. A 5-minute shower with a standard shower head uses 100 litres of water while a low flow shower head uses 35 litres of water.
7. Water your lawn every third day or less and water during the cool times of the day.
8. Sweep patios and sidewalks, don’t hose them.
9. Limit pesticides on your lawn to preventth
10. Drive less! lt takes approximately 10 litres of Water to produce a litre of gasoline,

Remember... without water, there is no lifel lil!
